From Little To Big!
Back in 2003, I built a pond in a small backyard off of the clients deck. The pond was about 8 feet by 14 feet with a small waterfall. The owner was really excited about it. Every time I saw him from then on he told me how much he loved the pond, and that he wished that he had made it bigger. Well, twelve years later in 2015, he called me and said “I want to rebuild the pond, and make it much bigger”. He told me that the less grass he has to cut the better! He wanted the new pond to be several times bigger that the old one, and have a Japanese garden feel. Here is his new pond!
This is without a doubt one of my favorite ponds. It’s just so cool! The rocks, the shape the whole design just works perfectly. The deck has a little trap door that opens up between the two chairs where the owner can drop in some fish food. 🙂 Two cement piers in the pond support it. The piers are coated with a black liquid rubber to seal the concrete and give it the black color to match the liner.
The pond has four 4″ bottom drains, and two skimmers that all gravity feed into a large cement filter tank behind the main waterfall. You can see it in the top middle picture. That too gets coated with the liquid rubber. One 13,000 gallon per hour pump, and two UV sterilizers run the pond. The old 40 watt unit reused from the old pond, and a new 120 watt high output unit.
The end of the pond on both sides of the deck has a nice river stone beach which helps to break up the ring of rock around the ponds borders. The larger gravel in the beach blends with the smaller gravel in the walkway that goes around the back of the deck. The owner loved his old pond….. I think that he might love this one too!
