Many Examples Of The Different Ponds That I Have Built!

This koi pond is set into a patio next to an inground pool. It is construced with two 4" bottom drains and a skimmer that are gravity fed into two tanks behind the shed. There are two pumps. One pulls from the tank connected to the two bottom drains and returns the water to the waterfall. The other pulls from the filter tank connected to the skimmer and returns to a mid-water return. There is also a 65 watt UV sterilizer . The rock around the pond is a combination of moss rock boulders and field stone.
Set into a hill on the side of a deck, this pond features some beautiful large koi. There are two bottom drains, and a skimmer are gravity fed to filter tanks under the deck.
This is also set into a hill. There are retaining walls built off both sides of the waterfalls to level off the higher grounds moving back into the hill. This keeps the dirt from running down into the pond. Also, the pond liner is all one piece that extends all the way up behind all of the rock to the top of the waterfall. This way no dirt can wash through the rocks and into the pond in a heavy rain.
These two pictures are of the same property. The above picture was the original pond built in 2006. It has had three different owners over the years. I have always maintained this pond with a monthly service contract that I offer all my clients. Last summer 2021, we reconstructed the pond by making it deeper, and built a new style of waterfall that is more dramatic, as per the new owners wishes. There are two bottom drains that are gravity fed to a filter system that is about 40 feet away behind the pool fence.
Here is a nice pond off of a pool patio. It's about 24 feet long and 12 feet wide. It features a waterfall that returns the water back to the pond by a pair of streams. The pond has some beautiful koi and a few large goldfish. I built this pond in 2002, and it's still one of my favorites.
The picture above as well as the pictures to the right are all of the same backyard. This was a project that was started in 2005. The owner had a landscape company that started to landscape his property and built a pond. The landscaping was incomplete and a mess, and the pond they built was a disaster. I was hired to rebuild the pond, which meant totally ripping out the existing mess, then design and install a new two level pond. After completion of the pond, I redesigned all the landscaping and landscaped the entire property... front and back. This backyard is still as beautiful as ever!
A pond, bluestone patio and a fire pit. I built this for a neighbor who I had originally built a small pond for near their front door. When I did that my father would come over and tease my neighbors that they should make it bigger and deeper. A couple years later, I did this in the backyard.
I had to include this picture, this was one of the first ponds that I ever built. I'm thinking it was in 1990. I still service this pond. The property has a slope, and the pond was set level by partially digging into the hill in the back, and using a lot of the dirt that came out of the hole to build up the level in the front of the pond. The two gold thread cypress' behind the pond I transplanted there from another part of their property. They are still there today, only much bigger! Instead of a waterfall, this pond had a stream that appeared to come from behind the cypress.
This is something different. A combination of pond and a formal fountain. The water returns through two 1-1/2" brass pipes cemented into a stone wall. The pond has a 4" bottom drain that gravity feeds into a filter tank behind the wall. A pump then sends the water to a 40 watt UV sterilizer and then back to the two return pipes that are regulated with PVC ball valves.
This pond was built in White Plains, New York in 2004. The original pond that was there, had to be rebuilt many times due to a high water table underground. Everytime they had a heavy rainstorm, the water would build up under the liner and the liner would then float up and displace a lot of the gravel, fish and plants onto the lawn. I removed the old pond, installed a drainage system under the liner of the new pond that I then built. I have not been back up there in years, but I know that they had no problems with the pond for several years after I built it. One thing to note, The large grey rock on the side of the waterfall. This was huge! It was like the top of a mountain! We had to build the pond around it.

Several different ponds in different settings.  There is a design to fit just about anywhere!

A koi pond built in 2002 with a deck off of the bedroom that extended out over the pond. This pond made the most out of the space available. The combination of moss rock, field stone and river stone gravel looks great. The owner of this pond was at one time the president of the Mid Atlantic Koi Club. I set up the filter system in his garage, and he later had a heat exchanger installed to heat the pond over the winter.
A really beautiful natural setting for this pond makes it an awesome place to sit and relax. The pond is like the shape of a pork chop. I built the bridge to match the railing on their deck on the house. One of the most interesting features of this pond is the fountain in the center. I found a strange concave shaped rock, and got the idea that it would make a great birdbath. But then I drilled a hole in the center of it, made a rock pedestal and turned it into a fountain. The small waterfall adds a nice touch. I also did all of the landscape work around it. The pond has two 4" bottom drains that gravity feed into a 150 gallon filter tank. A 4,500 gallon per hour pump, and a 40 watt UV sterilizer. Living in the pond are about 20 koi, and several frogs. 🙂
