Feeding wild birds is a great pastime that we can do all year round. It’s fun to see the many different varieties of birds that are eating at your feeders at different times of the year. Get yourself a good guide book to identify the birds that you see, as well as even a set of binoculars or a camera with a telephoto zoom lens to see these beautiful birds up close. All of the photos above I personally took with my camera. It has grown into a hobby of mine.
There are many different types of feeders and foods available to attract specific varieties of birds. Try to include a few different feeders each with a different choice of foods. As an example, woodpeckers love suet, while finches will enjoy nyjer seed. Hummingbirds will only drink a sugar-water mixture from hummingbird feeders. It is really fun to watch the birds. Feeding them helps to keep them alive and healthy in the winter months, and provides a great food source in the spring when they are nesting, and many natural seeds are not available as they are sprouting and growing into new plants.
